Items for Grab and Go Bags (in addition to sandwiches)

We cannot accept donations of meat which has not come from a commercial supplier (ex: no venison from hunters).

All food donations are used in meals prepared at the kitchen. We do not distribute food baskets to our guests. Therefore, there is no large requirement for food around Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Plenty of donations come in at this time, so if you are planning a food drive, if it is possible, please consider running it during the first 10 months of the year.

Unfortunately, we are not able to arrange pickups of donations. Please bring donations to Dorothy Day House from 1:00pm - 2:00pm any day of the week when the cooking crew is preparing the daily meal. Our address is 11 Spring Street in Danbury, CT.

Volunteer

Kitchen Volunteers

Kitchen volunteers are organized into crews. There are approximately 20 crews, with most crews preparing and serving the afternoon meal one day a month (ex. fourth Thursday of every month) from 1:00pm - 5:00pm. Our crews are fully staffed right now, but we can also use people on a backup basis. If you are interested, please contact Joe Simons (joesimons@yahoo.com) and indicate which days of the week you are available.

Without volunteers, Dorothy Day House could not exist.   Here are some ways to help out:

Santa’s Workshop

On a Saturday during the month of December, toys are distributed to children in the Spring Street neighborhood. For many children, this is the highlight of their Christmas season.   Donations of new unwrapped toys, new or gently used children's books and children's winter coats are needed for this event. For more information, contact Mary Korin at 203-297-1974 or marykorin@comcast.net

Thank you notes

We are looking for someone to write thank you notes to people who donate items from our wish list.

If you can help, please contact Lori-Ann Morrissey at loriannmorrissey@gmail.com

Cleaning

Lori-Ann Morrissey organizes a group to give the kitchen a deep cleaning once a month on a Saturday morning. If cleaning is your passion and you would like to help, contact Lori-Ann at loriannmorrissey@gmail.com

Baked Goods Donations Pickups

A number of local supermarkets have graciously made their expired baked goods available to us, but we use volunteers to pick up donations and deliver them to Spring Street.

At this time, we have enough baked goods pickup volunteers. Make sure to come back and check if spots have opened!

Clothing Help Needed

We are seeking a person or group of people to sort and display clothing as our long-time volunteer, Lynn Taborsak, prepares to step down from this task. If you have good retail or organizational skills and can offer 10–12 hours a week to sort and display donated clothing, we’d love to hear from you. Training will be provided.

Our guests deeply appreciate having clean, well-organized clothing available, and maintaining a good selection—sorted by size—helps them quickly find what they need. Lynn has done an outstanding job developing this program, and we are looking for individuals or a small team to carry it forward.

If you’re interested, please contact Lynn at ltaborsak@gmail.com.
